Greenhouses are framed or structures covered with transparent or translucent material which make controlled environmental conditions (controlled light, temperature, humidity and CO2) to get optimum growth and productivity to produce different agricultural and horticultural crops and protect them in unfavorable conditions.
Greenhouse Technology is the technique of providing favorable environment condition to the plants. It is rather used to protect the plants from the adverse climatic conditions, insects and diseases. Greenhouse culture is done in protected arias like greenhouse, glass house, shade houses etc.
Agriculture in modified condition is the modern and the most satisfying kind of greenhouse culture. Agriculture in modified condition is a combination of greenhouse technology and soilless culture that helps the best control and management of insects and diseases.
Greenhouse culture has many advantages, we listed the most important ones here:
  •    The yield may be 10-12 times higher than that of outdoor cultivation depending upon the type of greenhouse, type of crop, environmental control facilities.
  •  Reliability of crop increases under greenhouse cultivation.

  • Year round production.
  • Off-season production of vegetable and fruit crops.
  • Disease-free and genetically superior transplants can be produced continuously.
  • Efficient utilisation of chemicals, pesticides to control pest and diseases.
  • Water requirement of crops very limited and easy to control.
  • Hardening of tissue cultured plants
  • Most useful in monitoring and controlling the instability of various ecological system.
  • Modern techniques of Hydroponic (Soil less culture), Aeroponic and Nutrient film techniques are possible only under greenhouse cultivation.
